B.A.
Programs |
| |
While
CMES does not itself grant B.A. degrees, undergraduate programs concentrating
in Middle Eastern studies can be arranged in connection with several
disciplines, departments, and committees, including Near
Eastern Languages and Civilizations, History, Political
Science, Anthropology,
and Geographical
Studies. These programs typically center on the three-quarter
Introduction to Islamic Civilization, Introduction to Judaic Civilization,
or History of the Islamic Middle East courses and usually include
language study in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish, or Urdu. A wide
range of graduate level Middle Eastern area courses is also open
to undergraduates. For further information on College programs, visit
the College Catalog and
the Office of College
Admissions.

Doctoral
Programs |
| |
The
University of Chicago is noted for its interdisciplinary Ph.D.
programs with Middle East concentrations.
The Center does not offer a doctoral program, but rather works closely with
students, faculty, and departments from every discipline with a Middle East emphasis
to facilitate and integrate the diverse program requirements. Graduate students
are encouraged to begin their own research training as early
as possible and are given the opportunity to work under the supervision
of accomplished research scholars in small classes, seminars,
and individually designed reading and research courses. All students
are encouraged to carry out field research where applicable.
For further information on doctoral programs, contact the Dean
of Students, Division
of the Social Sciences, Foster Hall 107, 1130 E. 59th St.,
Chicago, IL 60637; telephone 773.702.8414 or the Dean
of Students, Division of the Humanities, The University of Chicago, 1115 E. 58th Street, Walker Museum Suite 111, Chicago, IL 60637.
